The Zugspitze

The Zugspitze, Germany´s highest mountain with almost 3000 m, provides terrific panoramic views. It is located at the Austrian border of the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria. The Zugspitze belongs to the Wetterstein range in the northern Kalkalpen. It’s named after the many avalanches on its steep north slopes.
At the Zugspitze's summit you`ll find the famous Münchner Haus alp cottage, a facility built by the German Alpine Association. For more than a hundred years, the summit has also had a weather station, which nowadays gathers data for the Global Atmosphere Watch.
There is a cog railway (Zugspitzbahn) and a cable car leading to the peak. For those wishing to reach the summit under their own power, various hiking and ski trails lead to the top. Hiking to the top from the base takes between 1-2 days and should only be approached under optimal body and weather conditions.
Using the cable car or cog railroad, it’s easy for anyone to reach the Zugspitze. The climb to the top also offers spectacular panoramas, but shouldn’t be underestimated by inexperienced hikers and climbers.

On a clear day, the city of Munich can be seen in the distance.
Our Tip: Swimming in the submontane Eibsee lake in the summertime is not only refreshing after a hike...
