Walking and hiking in the Alps around Garmisch-Partenkirchen is enjoyable at any time of the year. In winter the skiing — both downhill and crosscountry - are some of the best in the world. The walking and skiing trails are well-maintained and well-marked.
Many lakes can also be used for ice skating in the wintertime. Lake Riessersee itself was the location of Sportclub Riessersee’s foundation in 1920 and the venue for the Olympic speed skating events and ice hockey matches in 1936.
While spending your holidays in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you shouldn`t miss the cultural highlights and sights to see of the bavarian history in the region. There is a very strong Bavarian culture, rich in tradition. This can be seen in the houses, castles, churches and monasteries. The history is visible in the ‘old’ part of the cities, such as those in Partenkirchen and Oberammergau. In addition to these deeply rooted elements of the region, there are plenty of shopping venues and clubs etc. up to modern day expectations. We are sure everyone will find something here to suit their tastes!!
