The Alps

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is situated at the foot of the Wetterstein mountain range. These belong to the Northern Limestone Alps, which are part of the Eastern Alps. Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze (2962 m), and many other beautiful peaks can be found in the Wetterstein mountain range.
The mountains in the area are great for hikers and climbers alike and boast many challenging tours with considerable differences in elevation. As reward awaits a delicious, mouth-watering meal at one of the Alpine cabins (Almhütten) — not to mention the overwhelmingly beautiful moments one experiences when surrounded by nature in the Alps!

Needless to say, one doesn’t have to be a sports pro to enjoy the mountains; there are endless moderate and family-friendly routes in the area to choose from. Many of these are accessible right from the front door of your vacation apartment! As a Visitor of Garmisch you are also able to use the local busses for free and can therefore reach other hiking destinations without having to use a car.
If the difficult climb to the top isn’t possible, or you ”just” want to enjoy the view, then a comfortable ride up with the cable car is right for you. There are many peaks available by cable car — visit the webcams at www.zugspitze.de to get a feeling for the view that’s awaiting you.
You’ve already conquered all of the Wetterstein mountains?
Many other mountain ranges border on the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area, such as the neighbouring Ammergauer Alps, the Ester mountain range (Estergebirge), and the Karwendelmassiv…
The combination of alpine cabins and rugged rock provides not only a unique view, but also an irreplaceable habitat for many animals, such as chamois, marmots and golden eagles.
